66 new cases, 8 recoveries as Coronavirus cases in Kenya rise to 1029 – Health CS Mutahi Kagwe

Today we have the highest number of positive coronavirus cases, 66 cases, with Mombasa having the highest number at 30 Health CS Mutahi.

The 66 positive cases have been obtained from 2,621 samples tested in the last 24 hours. This brings to 49,405 the total number of samples tested to date, and the cumulative case load is 1,029.

Anyone can get the virus. Let us not discriminate or stigmatize the positive cases; CS Mutahi.

All the cases are stable. They are in isolation to prevent infections.

We are glad to inform you that we have discharged 8 patients who have recovered from the disease, and also have no additional fatality.

Despite the growing infections, we have been able to keep our Case Fatality Rate at 5.6% against the global average which is 6.6%. UK has 14.21pc, Italy – 14.15pc, France – 15.65pc and Sweden – 12.20pc; CS Mutahi Kagwe.

As we safeguard the health of our people in the East African region, we are proactively looking to enhance our capacities in mitigating health challenges through strengthening of disease surveillance and response systems; CS Mutahi Kagwe.

The EAC secretariat has overseen the procurement of mobile lab units, training of laboratory experts to operationalize the units & cascade knowledge transfer to build a critical mass of scientists across the country.

In the last month, we have seen a rise in the COVID 19 cases detected among truck drivers at various border points & recognize their continued support to ensure that we have adequate supplies of goods across the East African countries;
CS Health, Mutahi Kagwe.

We thank them for enduring long journeys and waiting times at border points as each country tries to be vigilant in their containment measures against COVID.

To address the truck drivers challenges, the country has put in place measures to ensure that the truck drivers are tested on time prior to their journey and receive a repeat test 14 days later; CS Health Mutahi Kagwe.

The mobile labs are equipped with modern equipment such as PCR and ELISA machines that are able to diagnose most pathogens causing communicable diseases such as Ebola and COVID 19.

The mobile labs have combined capacity to support 2,000 tests per day and couldn’t have come at a better time to complement existing laboratory network; CS Health.

One lab will be stationed in Namanga at the Kenya Tanzania border and the other at Naivasha dry port. In addition, the ministry also received mobile lab accessories, consumables, PPE, ICT (laptops, satellite phones) and electrical systems.

In order to contain further spread of coronavirus National Emergency Response Committee (NationalERKe) has extended cessation of movement in and out of Eastleigh in Nairobi until Saturday, the 6th June 2020; CS Mutahi Kagwe.

Malls, eateries, restaurants to remain closed and hawking prohibited ? until Saturday, the 6th June 2020.

EAC Secretariat has procured mobile labs to enhance testing of truck drivers. One lab will be stationed at the Namanga border point and another one in Naivasha.
