How to apply for NTSA smart digital driving licence in Kenya
It is a basic requirement and a must for any Kenyan driver to have a valid driving license to drive on the Kenyan roads or else risk being arrested or paying a hefty fine for falling on the wrong side of the law.
The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has given Kenyans up to July 1, 2020 to acquire the new smart driving licence or risk attracting instant fines or penalties.
The use of the old red booklet driving licences will be suspended on July 1 2020. This therefore will be the only way on how to renew or apply for a new smart digital driving license online in Kenya.
The smart digital driving licence costs Kenyans Ksh3050 paid via MPESA and is valid for 3 years.
The smart digital driver’s license was rolled out in 2018 by NTSA with an aim at instilling order on Kenyan roads.
The new licences have a chip that holds driver information and a points system that is used to discipline drivers.
The new licenses will be equipped with a digital wallet for paying fines.
The new license will be configured with 20 points, which are refreshed every three years. Losing points due to offenses will force NTSA to invalidate or suspend your license.
To apply for the new smart driving license online, you need to register on NTSA’s Citizen self-service portal, the Transport Integrated Management Systems (TIMS).
Transport Integrated Management System (TIMS) is a portal that enables you to access NTSA Kenya services online.
Here is how to create a NTSA TIMS account when applying for a new smart digital driving licence , renewing or replacing your driving licence (DL) in Kenya.
After registering an account, make an application under driving licence.
Ensure you use your ID serial number and not ID number when registering a TIMS account.
Remember do not share your TIMS information with anyone to ensure your account is safe.
You can create and manage your own Transport Integrated Management System TIMS account for easy access to NTSA services,anytime and from anywhere.
During TIMS account registration ensure the number provided is for the account owner. To modify your account details,log onto account click on your name, it will open a new window which will display a user center which allows you modify the details.
In case you are having trouble resetting your TIMS password. Click on forgot password, confirm the phone number attached to the account is yours, if the number is right,follow the instructions and make sure you are subscribed to receive free SMS ( send the word NTSA to 22847 to subscribe).
After creating a TIMS account and applying for a smart digital driving licence (DL) you then book an appointment online on the available day and visit NTSA offices near you for your bio metric details to be taken then wait wait for a text message when your new smart digital driving licence (DL) is ready.
