Safaricom waives MPESA transactions fees below Ksh1000
Safaricom PLC the leading provider of converged communications in Kenya on March 16th, 2020 waived fees for person to person M-PESA transactions below kshs1,000, and increased daily transaction limits from Kshs70,000 to Kshs150,000 as seen by Newszaleo.co.ke.
This is due to the evolving situation in the country around the COVID-19 (Coronavirus), pandemic.
This comes timely after President Uhuru Kenyatta asked for the protocol that in order to avoid the risk of transmission through physical handling of money, the government encourages the use of cashless transactions such as mobile money and credit cards. We appeal to mobile operators and banks to take into consideration the situation, and reduce the cost of transactions during this period.
The Central Bank of Kenya also on March 16th 2020, took emergency measures to facilitate mobile money transactions.
The Government Spokesperson Cyrus Oguna has since given the latest update on Coronavirus Covid-19 on March 16th, 2020 stating 3 more suspected cases awaiting results, 14 under quarantine awaiting test results and 20 admitted.
